Tetracycline Hydrochloride
Tetracycline is a broad spectrum antibiotic that kills bacteria by stopping their protein synthesis. It does so by binding to the 30s subunit of the ribosome.
Tetracycline is indicated for the following infections-
- Pneumonia (Community acquired & Walking Pneumonia)
- Infections caused by intracellular pathogens ( Chlamydia, Lyme disease, Rocky mountain spotted fever, Q fever)
- Acne
- Urinary tract Infections caused by susceptible organisms.
- Traveler's diarrhea
- Prostatitis
- Sexually transmitted diseases
Tetracycline is usually used orally by adults in amounts of 1-2 g per day, divided into 2-4 doses. Tetracycline oral dosage for children above the age of 8 years is 25-50 mg/kg per day, divided into 2-4 doses.
Tetracycline has the following side effects-
Tetracycline should not be prescribed to patients with impaired hepatic function. Taking expired tetracycline can cause hepatic failure.
Contraindication
Tetracycline is contraindicated in patients who were previously hypersensitive to tetracycline.
Tetracycline should not be taken with milk, antacids or mineral supplements.
Tetracycline is contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation. Children under 12 years should not be prescribed tetracycline.
