Kaposi Sarcoma

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a type of cancer that affects the skin and/or the lining of the mouth, nose, throat, and lungs. It is caused by a virus called human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8). KS is more common in people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS. Symptoms may include dark, purplish or reddish patches on the skin, mouth sores, and swelling of the legs and ankles. Diagnosis is typically made through a biopsy and imaging studies.

Treatment options may include combination antiretroviral therapy (for those with HIV/AIDS), chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and/or surgery. The choice of treatment depends on the extent and location of the cancer, as well as the overall health of the patient. It is important to seek medical attention if you experience symptoms that may be related to KS.
