Aspirin + Clopidogrel

Aspirin + Clopidogrel is a combination drug that acts as a coagulation modifier.

The mechanism of action of clopidogrel + aspirin is based on their ability to prevent blood clots from forming. Clopidogrel works by inhibiting the binding of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) to its receptors on platelets, which are cells in the blood that play a crucial role in blood clotting. By inhibiting the binding of ADP, clopidogrel reduces the activation and aggregation of platelets, which can help prevent the formation of blood clots.

Aspirin also works to prevent blood clots by inhibiting the production of thromboxane A2, a substance that promotes platelet aggregation. By blocking the production of thromboxane A2, aspirin helps to reduce the formation of blood clots.

Aspirin + Clopidogrel is indicated in-

  • Acute coronary syndrome: For patients with non–ST-segment elevation ACS (unstable angina/non–ST-elevation myocardial infarction), Aspirin+Clopidogrel has been shown to reduce the rate of myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke.
  • Patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), Aspirin+Clopidogrel has been shown to reduce the rate of MI and stroke.
  • Recent MI, recent stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease. Aspirin +Clopidogrel has been shown to reduce the rate of MI and stroke.

The recommended dose of aspirin + clopidogrel is typically one tablet containing 75 mg of aspirin and 75 mg of clopidogrel taken once daily.

Common side effects of aspirin + clopidogrel include-

  • gastrointestinal bleeding
  • bruising
  • headache

  • Aspirin + clopidogrel should be used with caution in patients with a history of bleeding disorders or a history of gastrointestinal bleeding. It should also be used with caution in patients with a history of liver or kidney disease.
  • Aspirin + clopidogrel may increase the risk of bleeding, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract and brain. Patients should inform their healthcare provider if they are taking any other medications that may increase the risk of bleeding, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or anticoagulants.
