Bromhexine Hydrochloride

Bromhexine HCl belongs to a class of drugs called mucolytics. Bromhexine affects mucus in its early phases of formation in the glands, within the mucus-secreting cells. Bromhexine causes the structure of acid mucopolysaccharide fibres in mucoid sputum to be disrupted, resulting in a mucus that is less viscous and easier to expectorate.

Bromhexine HCL is indicated for-

  • Tracheobronchitis
  • COPD
  • Bronchitis with emphysema
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Bronchitis with bronchospasm
  • Chronic inflammatory pulmonary conditions and
  • Pneumoconiosis
 

Adult: As tab/solution: 8-16 mg thrice a day
Child: As tab/solution: 2-5 years 4 mg twice a day; 6-11 years 8 mg thrice a day; ≥12 years Same as adult dose.

Bromhexine HCL can cause the following side effects-

  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN).
  • Nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • upper abdominal pain.
  • Sweating
  • Angioedema
  • urticaria
  • bronchospasm.
  • Headache
  • dizziness.
  • Rash
  • pruritus.

Precaution should be exercised in the following circumstances-

  • Peptic ulcer disease and asthma are both present in this patient.
  • Renal and hepatic impairment is severe.
  • Because of the potential dangers and lack of data on efficacy, cough medication should be used with caution in children (particularly those under the age of 6).
  • Lactation and pregnancy.

Contraindication

Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to bromhexine or any component of the product.
