Cefaclor

Cefaclor is a 2nd generation cephalosporin that kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, effective in Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial infections. 

Cefaclor is indicated for the following infections-

  • Respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia, bronchitis, exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, pharyngitis and tonsillitis, and as part of the management of sinusitis
  • Otitis media
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Urinary tract infections, including pyelonephritis and cystitis
  • Acute and chronic urinary tract infections.

Cefaclor is available as capsule, powder for suspension and pediatric drops.

Adults: 250mg per eight hours is the normal dosage for adults. Doses may be doubled for more serious illnesses or those caused by less susceptible organisms. Normal volunteers were given doses of 4g per day for 28 days with no adverse effects, but the total daily dosage should not surpass this level.

Pediatrics: The usual recommended daily dosage for children is 20mg/kg/day in divided doses every eight hours.

The commonly associated adverse effects of cefaclor include-

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Pseudomembranous colitis
  • Eosinophilia
  • Liver dysfunction
  • In the context of substantially decreased renal function, cefaclor should be used with caution.
  • Individuals having a history of gastro-intestinal disease, particularly colitis, should be taken broad-spectrum antibiotics with caution.
  • A false-positive reaction for glucose in the urine may occur with Benedict's or Fehling's solutions or with copper sulphate test tablets.
