Cefdinir

Cefdinir is a broad-spectrum antibiotic of the cephalosporin class, effective in Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial infections. It is a bactericidal antibiotic. It belongs to the third generation cephalosporins. It kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis.

Cefdinir is indicated for the following conditions-

Adults and Adolescents:

  • Community-Acquired Pneumonia caused by Haemophilus influenzae (including
    b-lactamase producing strains), Haemophilus parainfluenzae (including beta-lactamase
    producing strains), Streptococcus pneumoniae (penicillin-susceptible strains only), and
    Moraxella catarrhalis (including b-lactamase producing strains)
  • Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis cause by susceptible strains.
  • Acute Maxillary Sinusitis caused by susceptible pathogens.
  • Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Uncomplicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus
    (including beta-lactamase producing strains) and Streptococcus pyogenes.

Pediatric Patients:

  • Acute Bacterial Otitis Media
  • Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Uncomplicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus
    (including b-lactamase producing strains) and Streptococcus pyogenes.
  • Capsule: The total daily dose for all infections is 600 mg. It can be taken without any regards to meals.
  • Powder for oral Suspension (Pediatric patients):  The total daily dose for all infections is 14 mg/kg, upto 600 mg per day.
  • The total daily dose of Cefdinir should be lowered in individuals with temporary or permanent renal insufficiency (creatinine clearance 30 ml/min).

How to reconstitute powder for suspension:

Side effects of cefdinir are mild and self-limiting. The most common side effects were-

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • GI disturbances
  • Rash
  • Headache

 

  • Prolonged treatment with cefdinir may result in the possible emergence and overgrowth of resistant organisms like C. difficile.
  • Cefdinir should be prescribed with caution for patients with history of colitis.

Contraindication

  • Cefdinir is contraindicated in patients with known allergy to the cephalosporin or penicillin class of antibiotics, such as-
  • Antacids containing magnesium or aluminum interfere with the absorption of cefdinir. Iron supplements, including multivitamins that contain iron, interfere with the absorption of cefdinir. 

There is no known contraindication of cefdinir in terms of food & drinks.
