Alcaftadine

Alcaftadine ophthalmic solution is a histamine H1 receptor antagonist indicated for the prevention and treatment of ocular itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis. It acts by selectively blocking histamine H1 receptors and reducing the symptoms of allergic reactions.

Alcaftadine ophthalmic solution is indicated for the prevention and treatment of ocular itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis in patients aged 2 years and older.

 

 

The recommended dose of alcaftadine ophthalmic solution is one drop in each affected eye twice daily. The solution may be used with or without contact lenses.

 

The most common adverse reactions reported with alcaftadine ophthalmic solution are:

  • Eye irritation (burning, stinging, itching, watering)
  • Headache
  • Nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the nose and pharynx)

 

  • Alcaftadine ophthalmic solution should only be used as directed by a healthcare professional.
  • Contact lenses should be removed before applying the solution and can be reinserted 10 minutes after application.
  • Patients should not wear contact lenses if their eyes are red.
  • If patients experience eye pain, changes in vision, or continued redness or irritation of the eye, they should discontinue use and consult their healthcare provider.
  • Alcaftadine ophthalmic solution should not be used to treat contact lens-related irritation or discomfort.
  • It is not known if alcaftadine ophthalmic solution is safe or effective in pediatric patients younger than 2 years of age.
  • Patients should inform their healthcare provider if they are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if they are breastfeeding.
  • Alcaftadine ophthalmic solution should be stored at room temperature and away from light.

 

Contraindication

Alcaftadine ophthalmic solution is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to alcaftadine or any of the other ingredients in the solution.
