Ambroxol Hydrochloride

Ambroxol Hydrochloride is a mucolytic agent. It breaks down acid mucopolysaccharide fibers, the main component of sputum or mucus, making the sputum thinner and easier to cough out. 

Ambroxol HCl is indicated for the symptomatic relief of cough for the following condition-

  • tracheobronchitis
  • emphysema
  • bronchitis
  • bronchiectasis
  • bronchospasm asthma
  • Adults: daily dose of 30 mg (one Ambroxol HCl HCl tablet ) to 120 mg (4 Ambroxol HCl HCl tablets) taken in 2 to 3 divided doses
  • Children up to 2 years: half a teaspoonful Ambroxol HCl syrup twice daily
  • Children 2 - 5 years: half a teaspoonful Ambroxol HCl syrup 3 times daily
  • Children over 5 years: One teaspoonful Ambroxol HCl syrup 2-3 times daily.

Ambroxol HCl may cause the following side effects-

  • Nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • dyspepsia
  • dry mouth or throat
  • abdominal pain
  • heartburn
  • dysgeusia/ taste dsiturbances
  • Precaution is advised while treating patients with stomach or duodenal ulcers, ciliary dyskinesia, and bronchial conditions. 
  • Although rare, there have been reports of fatal reactions in pediatric patients.

Contraindication

Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component of the formulation.

There is no known contraindications of the preparation in terms of food and drinks.
