Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting their protein synthesis. It binds to the ribosome and inhibits translocation.

Chloramphenicol is indicated for the Treatment of-

Adults (including the elderly) and children aged 2 and up should apply one drop to the affected eye every two hours for the first 48 hours, then every four hours after that. Only to be used during the day.
Even if symptoms improve, treatment should be continued for another 5 days.

Chloramphenicol eye drops can cause the following side effects-

Following topical treatment of chloramphenicol, bone marrow hypoplasia, including aplastic anemia and mortality, has been documented. When fewer potentially harmful medicines would be expected to offer successful treatment, chloramphenicol should not be administered.
Antibiotic use for an extended period of time can lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, such as fungus. If new infections develop while taking the medication, or if clinical improvement does not occur within one week, the treatment should be stopped and appropriate steps implemented.
