Chlorhexidine Gluconate

Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic and disinfectant. It is highly potent against both gram (+) and gram (-) bacteria. It is only used topically.

Chlorhexidine is used in the following conditions-

  • Surgical hand disinfectant
  • Regular use disinfectant
  • Patient preoperative skin preparation
  • Skin wound and general skin cleansing
  • Prophylactic mouthwash for gingivitis and other oral infections caused by bacteria
  • bleeding
  • Cuts
  • Burns

Hand rub:

5 mL chlorhexidine gluconate should rubbed thoroughly all over the hands. The hands should be rinsed before applying chlorhexidine gluconate. After rubbing thoroughly, the hands should be dried.

Cream:

Apply 2-3 times daily on the affected area.

Gargle/ Oral rinse:

Recommended use is twice daily oral rinsing for 30 seconds, morning and evening after toothbrushing. Usual dosage is 15ml (marked in cap) of undiluted

Topical formulation may cause the following side effects-

  • Skin burning

Oral formulation may cause the following side effects-

  • Teeth discoloration
  • Taste disturbances
  • For topical and oral gargle use only.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Avoid getting the medicine into the eye.

Contraindication

Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component of the formulation.
