Ferrous Sulphate

Ferrous sulphate is an inorganic salt that is used as a supplement. It is available as powder for suspension.

 

Ferrous sulphate is indicated in-

  • Iron deficiency
  • Anemia caused by iron deficiency
  • Anemic condition during pregnancy

Adult-

  • Initial therapeutic dose: 3-4½ teaspoonful daily in divided doses or as prescribed by the physician.
  • Maintenance dose: 1½ teaspoonful daily, but if needed up to 1.8g (9 teaspoonful) daily can be given.

Children-

  • Under 1 year: ¼ teaspoonful thrice daily or as directed by physician
  • 1-5 years: 1 teaspoonful thrice daily
  • 6-12 years: 1½ teaspoonful twice daily.

Reconstituting Ferrous sulphate powder for suspension:

Commonly associated side effects include-

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain

 

  • Iron absorption is inadequate in patients who have had a gastric bypass.

  • Iron preparations should be used with caution in people who have had a peptic ulcer or inflammatory bowel illness, such as regional enteritis or ulcerative colitis.
    Patients with intestinal strictures or diverticula should be treated with caution.

     

  • After anemia has been corrected, medication should not last more than three months.

     

  • Because combined deficit generates microcytic blood film, co-existing vitamin B12 or folic acid insufficiency should be ruled out.

     

  • After long-term use of this substance, dental cavities is a distinct possibility.

     

  • These tablets contain sugar and should be given with caution to diabetic people.

     

  • Patients with an excess of iron are especially vulnerable to infection. Iron excess should be treated with prudence.

  • Due to the risk of mouth ulcerations and tooth discoloration, tablets should not be sucked, chewed or kept in the mouth, but swallowed whole with water.

Contraindication

Hypersensitivity to the product and its ingredients.

There's no known contraindications of ferrous sulphate in terms of food and drinks.

Ferrous sulphate is contraindicated in-

  • hemosiderosis
  • haemochromatosis
  • active peptic ulcer
  • repeated blood transfusion
  • hemolytic anemia
