Remarks

Flucloxacillin

Flucloxacillin is a beta-lactamase resistant synthetic penicillin. It kills bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.

Flucloxacillin is indicated for the following cases-

  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Respiratory infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Meningitis
  • Osteomyelitis/ Bone infection
  • Surgical prophylaxis
  • Flucloxacillin is available as oral capsules, suspension and Intravenous/ intramuscular injection.
  • It should be taken before meals with water.
  • The dosage depends on the age, weight and renal function of the patient, as well as on the severity of the infection. Usual adult dosage (Including elderly patients) is 250mg four times a day.
  • In serious infections, the dosage may be doubled.
  • Flucloxacillin does not usually require dosage modification in persons with renal impairment. In the case of severe renal failure (creatinine clearance 10ml/min), a dose reduction or dose interval extension should be considered. Because dialysis does not appreciably eliminate flucloxacillin, no further dosages are required during or after the dialysis phase. Adults should take 1 g every 8 to 12 hours as a maximum dose.

How to reconstitute flucloxacillin for suspension

The most common side effects associated with flucloxacillin are-

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dyspepsia
  • Diarrhea
  • Rash (Uncommon)
  • There have been reports of hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice. These side effects have nothing to do with the dose or the route of administration. Flucloxacillin should be used with caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction, patients over the age of 50, and patients with underlying disease, as they are all at a higher risk of hepatic responses.
  • In patients with hepatic impairment, flucloxacillin should be taken with caution.
  • In the treatment of patients with allergic diathesis, caution is also advised.

Contraindication

Patients having a history of hypersensitivity to beta lactam antibiotics such as-

should avoid flucloxacillin.

There's no known contraindications of flucloxacillin in terms of food and drinks.

Flucloxacillin is contraindicated in people who have had flucloxacillin-related jaundice or liver problems/ diseases in the past.
