Fluorescein Sodium

Fluorescein Sodium is a fluorescent dye that is used as a diagnostic tool in various medical procedures. It is available in the form of an injectable solution and is usually administered intravenously. The most common use of fluorescein sodium is in ophthalmology, where it is used to evaluate the health of the eyes, particularly the cornea and retina. Fluorescein sodium is also used in other medical procedures such as examination of the urinary tract, skin, and joints.

Fluorescein Sodium is indicated in the diagnosis of corneal abrasions, corneal ulcers and herpetic corneal infections.

  • The dosage of Fluorescein Sodium varies depending on the indication for use and the route of administration. For ophthalmic use, the usual adult dose is one or two drops of a 10% solution instilled into the affected eye(s) as needed.
  • For intravenous use, the usual adult dose is 2-10 mg, administered as a slow intravenous injection over a period of 2-5 minutes. It is important to note that the dosage should be determined by a healthcare professional based on the individual's needs and medical condition.

Common side effects may include:

  • Eye irritation and discomfort
  • Blurred vision
  • Allergic reactions (such as hives, rash, itching, or difficulty breathing)
  • Staining of the skin and clothing
  • Inform your healthcare provider if you are allergic to fluorescein or any other dyes, or if you have any other allergies.
  • Tell your healthcare provider if you have any history of kidney or liver disease, as well as any other medical conditions.
  • Avoid contact with the skin and clothing, as the dye may stain.
  • If you experience any eye irritation or discomfort after using the drops, you should stop using them and contact your healthcare provider.
  • As fluorescein is a diagnostic tool, it shouldn't be used as a treatment, follow-up with your healthcare provider to discuss the results and any necessary follow-up action.

Contraindication

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to fluorescein.

Oral Fluorescein Sodium is contraindicated in acute necrotizing pancreatitis.
