Fluorometholone

Fluorometholone acetate is a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. It exerts its effects by inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators and suppressing the immune response.

Fluorometholone acetate is indicated for:

  • Inflammatory Conditions of the Eye: It is used to treat various inflammatory conditions of the eye, such as allergic conjunctivitis, episcleritis, and uveitis.

Agitate thoroughly before application. Administer one to two drops into the conjunctival sac(s) four times daily. In the first 24 to 48 hours, the dose can be increased to two drops every two hours. If there is no improvement after a two-week period, it is advisable to seek advice from a healthcare professional. Caution should be exercised to avoid prematurely discontinuing the therapy.

Adverse reactions associated with fluorometholone acetate may include:

  • Burning or Stinging: Transient discomfort upon instillation.
  • Blurred Vision: Temporary blurring of vision may occur.
  • Increased Intraocular Pressure: Prolonged use may lead to increased intraocular pressure.
  • Cataract Formation: Long-term use may contribute to the development of cataracts.
  • Secondary Infections: Prolonged use may increase the risk of secondary infections.
  • Fungal infections of the cornea are particularly prone to develop coincidentally with long-term local steroid application. Fungus invasion must be considered in any persistent corneal ulceration where a steroid has been used or is in use.
  • Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface, as this may contaminate the suspension. The preservative in fluorometholone acetate ophthalmic suspension, benzalkonium chloride, may be absorbed by soft contact lenses. Contact lenses should be removed during the instillation of fluorometholone acetate ophthalmic suspension but may be reinserted 15 minutes after instillation.

Contraindication

Contraindicated in those persons who have known hypersensitivity to any component of fluorometholone acetate ophthalmic suspension.

Contraindicated in acute superficial herpes simplex keratitis, vaccinia, varicella, and most other viral diseases of cornea and conjunctiva; mycobacterial infection of the eye; fungal diseases; acute purulent untreated infections, which like other diseases caused by microorganisms, may be masked or enhanced by the presence of the steroid;
