Remarks

Gentian Violet

Gentian Violet is classified as an antifungal and antibacterial agent. Gentian Violet exerts its antimicrobial effects by interfering with the DNA and RNA of microorganisms. It is effective against a variety of bacteria, fungi, and some protozoa.

Gentian violet is used to-

  • Treat fungal infections like athlete's foot & ring worm
  • Help lower the chance of infection from minor cuts, scrapes, burns, or insect bites

  • Before application, cleanse the affected region, rinse thoroughly, and gently dry the area. Ensure the skin is completely dry prior to the application of this medication. To prevent staining of your hands, use a cotton swab for application.
  • Administer gentian violet to the affected area, typically once or twice daily, or as per your doctor's instructions.
  • Apply exclusively to the affected area, avoiding contact with surrounding healthy skin.

Adverse reactions are listed in decreasing order of frequency:

  • Staining of Skin and Mucous Membranes
  • Local Irritation or Burning Sensation
  • Dryness of Treated Area
  • Temporary Discoloration of Teeth and Tongue
  • Staining: Gentian Violet can cause permanent staining of skin, mucous membranes, and clothing. Caution should be exercised to avoid unwanted staining.
  • Avoid Ingestion: Do not swallow Gentian Violet, especially in oral forms. Accidental ingestion may lead to systemic effects.
  • Photosensitivity: Gentian Violet may increase sensitivity to sunlight. Patients should be advised to protect treated areas from excessive sun exposure.
  • Allergic Reactions: Monitor for signs of allergic reactions, and discontinue use if skin irritation or allergic symptoms occur.
  • Prolonged Use: Prolonged use of Gentian Violet may lead to overgrowth of resistant organisms. Use should be limited to the prescribed duration.
