Remarks

Halothane

Halothane is a general inhalation anesthetic. Halothane exerts its anesthetic effects by enhancing the inhibitory neurotransmission mediated by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA-A receptor. This leads to central nervous system depression and ultimately produces general anesthesia.

Halothane is indicated for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia in adult and pediatric patients.

The dosage is individualized based on the patient's age, weight, physical condition, and the nature of the surgical procedure.

Common side effects associated with Halothane:

  • Respiratory depression
  • Hypotension
  • Bradycardia
  • Increased salivation

Cardiovascular System:

  • Halothane may sensitize the myocardium to the effects of circulating catecholamines, potentially leading to arrhythmias.
  • Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease.

Hepatic Function:

  • Halothane has been associated with rare instances of severe hepatitis.
  • Monitor liver function during and after halothane administration.

Malignant Hyperthermia:

  • Malignant hyperthermia, a potentially fatal syndrome, has been reported with the use of inhalation anesthetics, including halothane.
  • Prompt treatment with dantrolene and supportive measures are essential.

Renal Function:

  • Use cautiously in patients with impaired renal function as halothane and its metabolites may affect renal function.

Respiratory System:

  • Halothane can cause respiratory depression and should be used cautiously in patients with respiratory conditions.

Contraindication

Halothane is contraindicated in the following conditions:

  • Known hypersensitivity to halothane or its components.

Halothane is contraindicated in-

  • Patients with a history of severe hepatic dysfunction or previous halothane-related hepatitis.
  • Patients with known or suspected genetic susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia.
