Remarks

Lactulose

Lactulose is belongs to a class of drugs called laxatives. It is a type of sugar that is not absorbed by the body and instead is fermented by bacteria in the large intestine, which produces metabolites that draw in water into the lumen resulting in a softer stool and increased bowel movements.

Lactulose is indicated in the following conditions-

  • Treatment of constipation
  • Treatment of chronic constipation in patients with anorectal dysfunction
  • Treatment of portal-systemic encephalopathy (PSE) associated with liver disease.

  • The recommended dosage for adults is 10-15ml (2-3 teaspoons) taken orally, twice a day.
  • The recommended dosage for children is 3-10ml (0.6-2 teaspoons) taken orally, twice a day.
  • Common side effects include gas, bloating and abdominal cramps.
  • Less common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, and flatulence.
  • Rare side effects include electrolyte imbalances and allergic reactions
  • Lactulose may cause gas and bloating. This is normal and will decrease with continued use.
  • Lactulose may cause diarrhea. If diarrhea persists, consult your healthcare provider.
  • Lactulose should be used with caution in patients with diabetes as it may increase blood sugar levels.
  • Lactulose should be used with caution in patients with a history of kidney disease as it may increase the risk of electrolyte imbalances.
