Anastrozol

Anastrozole is a medication used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It is a type of aromatase inhibitor, which works by blocking the production of estrogen in the body. Breast cancer cells are responsive to estrogen; where estrogen stimulates the proliferation of the cancer cells.

Anastrozole is indicated for-

  • Adjuvant treatment of postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer
  • First-line treatment of postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive or hormone receptor unknown locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer
  • Extended adjuvant treatment of early breast cancer in postmenopausal women who have received 5 years of adjuvant tamoxifen therapy

The recommended dosage for adults is one 1mg tablet taken once daily.

Side effects associated with Anastrozole include-

  • Common side effects include hot flashes, joint pain, and fatigue.
  • Less common side effects include headache, nausea, and skin rash.
  • Rare side effects include osteoporosis, increased cholesterol levels, and heart disease.

  • Anastrozole may cause bone loss, which may increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. It is important for patients to maintain good bone health through diet and exercise.
