Levocarnitine

Levocarnitine is an amino acid derivative and a nutritional supplement. Levocarnitine plays a vital role in the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria, where they are metabolized to produce energy. It helps in the breakdown of fats and their conversion into usable energy.

  • Levocarnitine is indicated as a nutritional supplement to treat or prevent carnitine deficiency, which may occur due to certain medical conditions or as a result of specific medications.
  • It is also used as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of primary systemic carnitine deficiency and secondary carnitine deficiency syndromes.
  • Adults: The recommended oral dosage for adults is 990 mg two or three times a day using the 330 mg tablets, depending on clinical response.
  • Infants and children: The recommended oral dosage for infants and children is between 50 and 100 mg/kg/day in divided doses, with a maximum of 3 g/day. Dosage should begin at 50 mg/kg/day.  The exact dosage will depend on clinical response.

The following side effects may occur with levocarnitine-

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Body odor (fishy odor)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Hypotension (low blood pressure)

  • Renal Impairment: Caution should be exercised in patients with impaired renal function as Levocarnitine is excreted primarily by the kidneys. Dosage adjustments may be necessary in such cases.
  • Pregnancy and Lactation: The safety of Levocarnitine during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been well-established. Consult a healthcare professional before using it in these conditions.
  • Drug Interactions: Levocarnitine may interact with certain medications, especially anticoagulants and thyroid hormones. Discuss all the medications you are taking with your healthcare provider.
  • Allergic Reactions: Patients with a known hypersensitivity to Levocarnitine should avoid its use.
