Aspirin

Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties. The mechanism of action of aspirin is to inhibit the activity of an enzyme called cyclooxygenase (COX). COX is responsible for the production of prostaglandins, which are hormone-like substances that mediate pain, inflammation, and fever.

Aspirin acetylates and inactivates COX-1, which blocks the production of TXA2 in platelets. TXA2 promotes the clumping together of platelets and the formation of blood clots. This results in decreased platelet aggregation and a reduced ability of the blood to form clots.

  • Aspirin is indicated for the treatment of pain, fever, and inflammation.
  • It is also used for the prevention of cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction (heart attack) and stroke, in patients with a history of these conditions.

  • The dosage of Aspirin should be individualized based on the patient's condition and response to treatment.
  • The recommended dose for adults is 325-650 mg every 4-6 hours as needed for pain or fever.
  • The maximum daily dose is 4 grams.
  • The recommended dose for the prevention of cardiovascular events is 81-325 mg daily.

The most common adverse reactions associated with Aspirin include-

  • dyspepsia
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • gastrointestinal bleeding
  • headache
  • tinnitus (ringing in the ears)

  • Aspirin should be used with caution in patients with a history of stomach ulcers, liver or kidney disease, asthma, or heart failure. It should also be used with caution in elderly patients and in patients who are taking other medications that may increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Aspirin should be discontinued prior to surgery or other invasive procedures to reduce the risk of bleeding
  • Aspirin can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman.
