Loratadine

Loratadine is a long-acting tricyclic antihistamine with selective peripheral histamine H1-receptor antagonistic activity.

Loratadine is indicated for the relief of

  • nasal and non-nasal symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis
  • treatment of chronic idiopathic urticaria in patients 2 years of age or older
  • Adults and children aged 6 and up: Loratadine is used once a day in the form of one 10 mg tablet or rapidly disintegrating tablets, or two teaspoonfuls (10 mg) of syrup.
  • Children aged 2 to 5 years: Loratadine Syrup is taken once a day at a quantity of 5 milligrams (1 teaspoonful).
  • The starting dose for adults and children aged 6 and up who have liver failure or renal insufficiency (GFR 30 mL/min) should be 10 mg (one tablet or two teaspoonfuls) every other day.
  • The starting dose for children 2 to 5 years old with liver failure or renal insufficiency should be 5 mg (one teaspoonful) every other day.

Commonly reported side effects of Loratadine include-

  • Headache
  • Somnolence
  • Fatigue/ Asthenia
  • Dry mouth
  • Patients with liver impairment or renal insufficiency (GFR < 30 mL/min) should be given a lower initial dose (10 mg every other day).
  • Caution should be exercised when Loratadine is administered to a nursing woman.

Contraindication

Contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to this medication or to any of its ingredients.
