Meclizine Hydrochloride

Meclizine Hydrochloride is an antihistamine and anticholinergic agent. Meclizine exerts its effects by antagonizing the action of histamine at H1 receptors in the vestibular system and the vomiting center, thus reducing vestibular stimulation and preventing nausea and vomiting.

 

  • Meclizine Hydrochloride is indicated for the prevention and treatment of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness associated with motion sickness.
  • Meclizine Hydrochloride is indicated for the treatment of vertigo associated with diseases affecting the vestibular system in adults.

 

  • The recommended adult dosage for motion sickness prevention is 25 to 50 mg, taken orally, 1 hour before travel. Repeat the dose every 24 hours as necessary.
  • For the treatment of symptoms, the recommended dosage is 25 to 50 mg, taken orally every 24 hours as needed.
  • Dosage adjustments may be required for elderly patients and individuals with liver or kidney impairment.

The following side effects have been reported with the use of meclizine HCL-

  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Blurred vision
  • Constipation
  • Nervousness or anxiety
  • Urinary retention

 

  • Sedation: Meclizine may cause drowsiness and impair the ability to operate machinery or drive a vehicle. Caution should be exercised while performing tasks that require mental alertness.
  • Alcohol and Central Nervous System Depressants: Concomitant use of alcohol or other central nervous system depressants may potentiate the sedative effects of Meclizine.
  • Allergic Reactions: Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Meclizine or other antihistamines should avoid its use.
  • Anticholinergic Effects: Meclizine may cause dry mouth, blurred vision, and urinary retention. Use with caution in patients with urinary retention or prostatic hypertrophy.
  • Elderly and Debilitated Patients: Elderly patients may be more susceptible to anticholinergic side effects.

 

Contraindication

Meclizine Hydrochloride is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to the drug or its components.
