Megestrol Acetate

Megestrol Acetate is a progestin and belongs to the class of hormonal agents. Megestrol Acetate exerts its effects by binding to and activating progesterone receptors. This results in the inhibition of gonadotropin secretion, leading to suppression of the luteinizing hormone surge. In certain conditions, megestrol acetate may also have antiandrogenic effects.

Megestrol Acetate Oral Suspension is indicated for the treatment of anorexia, cachexia, or an unexplained, significant weight loss in patients with a diagnosis of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

  • The recommended adult initial dosage of Megestrol Acetate Oral Suspension is 800 mg/day (20 mL/day).
  • Shake container well before using.
  • In clinical trials evaluating different dose schedules, daily doses of 400 and 800 mg/day were found to be clinically effective.
  • A plastic dosage cup with 10 mL and 20 mL markings is provided for convenience.

  • Impaired Wound Healing: Use with caution in patients with impaired wound healing or a history of thrombophlebitis.

  • Hypersensitivity Reactions: Discontinue megestrol acetate if signs of hypersensitivity reactions occur and initiate appropriate medical treatment.

  • Fluid Retention: Monitor patients for signs of fluid retention and congestive heart failure, especially in those with pre-existing cardiac conditions.
