Mupirocin

Mupirocin is an antibacterial drug belonging to the class of monoxycarbolic acid. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis by binding to isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase enzyme, thus preventing bacterial growth.

Mupirocin is indicated for the topical treatment of bacterial skin infections, including impetigo, infected eczema, and secondary infected traumatic skin lesions.

For adults and children above 12 years, apply a small amount of the ointment to the affected area three times a day. For children aged 2-12 years, apply the ointment twice daily.

The most common adverse reactions associated with Mupirocin ointment are-

  • mild burning
  • stinging
  • itching at the site of application

Less common side effects include skin rash, headache, nausea, and diarrhea.

  • Mupirocin is for topical use only and should not be used in the eyes or inside the nose.
  • Mupirocin should be used with caution in patients with known renal impairment.
  • Prolonged use of Mupirocin may result in the growth of resistant bacteria or fungi, which may require alternative treatment.
  • Mupirocin should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components.
  • Patients should be advised to discontinue use of the drug if a skin rash or allergic reaction develops.

Contraindication

Mupirocin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components.

Mupirocin should not be used in patients with fungal or viral infections.
