Remarks

Nepafenac

Nepafenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). The mechanism of its action is thought to be due to its ability to block prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting cyclooxygenase 1 and 2. Nepafenac is usually used as a topical eye drop.

Nepafenac ophthalmic solution is indicated for the treatment of postoperative inflammation in patients who have undergone cataract extraction.

  • Eye inflammation

One drop of Nepafenac ophthalmic suspension should be applied to the affected eye three times per day beginning one day before cataract surgery and continuing on the day of surgery and for the first two weeks after surgery.

Most common adverse reactions are-

  • capsular opacity
  • decreased visual acuity
  • foreign body sensation
  • increased intraocular pressure
  • sticky sensation
  • headache
  • 5.1 Increased Bleeding Time With some nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs including Nepafenac, there exists the potential for increased bleeding time due to interference with thrombocyte aggregation. It is recommended that Nepafenac ophthalmic suspension be used with caution in patients with known bleeding tendencies or who are receiving other medications which may prolong bleeding time.
  • Prolonged Healing Nepafenac and other topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may slow or delay healing. Topical corticosteroids have also been shown to slow or postpone healing. Concurrent use of topical NSAIDs and topical steroids may increase the likelihood of healing issues.
  • Keratitis may result from the use of topical NSAIDs. Continued use of topical NSAIDs may result in epithelial breakdown, corneal thinning, corneal erosion, corneal ulceration, or corneal perforation in some susceptible patients.
  • Nepafenac should not be administered while using contact lenses
