Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters

Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters are a class of lipid-lowering agents. Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters contain the active components eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These fatty acids have various mechanisms of action, including reducing triglyceride levels by inhibiting triglyceride synthesis in the liver, increasing plasma lipoprotein lipase activity, and decreasing the hepatic production of very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol.

Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters are indicated for the following conditions:

  • Severe hypertriglyceridemia: To reduce elevated triglyceride levels in patients with triglyceride levels of 500 mg/dL or higher.
  • Adjunct to diet: To lower triglyceride levels in patients with triglyceride levels of 200-499 mg/dL who have not responded to diet modification alone.

The usual dosage is a minimum of 250–500 mg combined EPA and DHA each day.

Adverse reactions associated with Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters may include:

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances (e.g., burping, indigestion, diarrhea)
  • Dysgeusia (altered taste sensation)
  • Back pain
  • Nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the nasal passages and pharynx)
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Hypersensitivity reactions (rare)

  • Patients with known hypersensitivity to fish or shellfish should exercise caution when taking Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters.
  • Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters should be used with caution in patients with a known bleeding disorder or those taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications due to the potential for increased bleeding risk.
  • Patients with diabetes should be monitored closely as Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters may affect blood glucose levels.
  • Patients should inform their healthcare provider about any concomitant medications they are taking, as there may be interactions with certain medications.
  • Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters should not be used as a monotherapy for dyslipidemia; it should be used in conjunction with a proper diet and lifestyle modifications.

Contraindication

Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters are contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to fish or shellfish or any components of the product.

Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters should not be used in patients with pancreatitis or a history of pancreatitis, as they may exacerbate the condition.
