Oxytetracycline
Oxytetracycline is a broad spectrum antibiotic that kills bacteria by stopping their protein synthesis. It does so by binding to the 30s subunit of the ribosome.
Oxytetracycline is indicated in the following diseases-
- Pneumonia (Community acquired & Walking Pneumonia)
- Infections caused by intracellular pathogens ( Chlamydia, Lyme disease, Rocky mountain spotted fever, Q fever)
- Acne
- Urinary tract Infections caused by susceptible organisms.
- Traveler's diarrhea
- Prostatitis
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Ophthalmic infections: Trachoma
- Rickettsial infections
- Other infections: Psittacosis, brucellosis, cholera, acute
- intestinal amoebiasis etc.
For adults, the recommended dose is 250-50mg every 6 hours.
Oxytetracycline has the following side effects-
Oxytetracycline should be used with caution in renal impairment.
Contraindication
Oxytetracycline is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to tetracycline.
Oxytetracycline should not be taken with milk, antacids or mineral supplements.
Oxytetracycline is contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation. Children under 12 years should not be prescribed tetracycline.
