Permethrin

Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide that belongs to the class of drugs known as pediculicides and scabicides. It acts by disrupting the nervous system of the parasites and causing paralysis and death.

Permethrin is indicated for the topical treatment of scabies in humans.

Apply a thin layer of permethrin cream (5%) to the entire body from the neck down, including the soles of the feet. Leave the cream on for 8 to 14 hours before washing it off with soap and water.

The following adverse reactions have been reported with the use of permethrin:

  • Skin irritation, including itching, burning, and stinging
  • Rash
  • Erythema
  • Tingling or numbness of the skin

Before using permethrin, patients should be advised to:

  • Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes
  • Avoid application to open wounds or irritated skin
  • Use caution when applying the medication to the face or around the eyes
  • Wash hands thoroughly after application
  • Use with caution in patients with a history of asthma or other respiratory disorders
  • Use with caution in pregnant or nursing women, as the safety of permethrin has not been established in these populations
