Pheniramine Maleate

Pheniramine Maleate is an antihistamine drug that belongs to the class of H1 receptor antagonists. The drug works by blocking the histamine receptors in the body, thereby preventing the release of histamine and reducing the symptoms associated with allergic reactions.

 

Pheniramine temporarily relieves the following symptoms due to hay fever or other upper respiratory allergies:

  • sneezing
  • runny nose
  • itchy, watery eyes
  • itching of the nose or throat

Adults:

The usual adult dose is 4 mg every 4-6 hours, maximum 24 mg daily.

Child:

  • 6-12 years: 2 mg every 4-6 hours, maximum 12 mg daily.
  • 2-5 years: 1 mg every 4-6 hours, maximum 6 mg daily.
  • 1-2 years: 1 mg twice daily.

Pheniramine Maleate is not recommended for children under 1 year.

 

Common side effects may include:

  • dizziness/ drowsiness
  • dry mouth, nose, or throat
  • constipation
  • blurred vision
  • feeling nervous or restless
  • Pheniramine Maleate can cause drowsiness and impair the ability to operate machinery or drive, so it is advisable to avoid such activities while on this drug.
  • Patients should avoid alcohol consumption while taking Pheniramine Maleate, as it may worsen the side effects of the drug.
  • Pheniramine Maleate should be used with caution in patients with liver or kidney disease.
  • The drug should not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to it or any of its components.
  • Pheniramine Maleate should be used with caution in elderly patients, as they may be more sensitive to the side effects of the drug.

Contraindication

Pheniramine is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to the drug itself.

 

Pheniramine is contraindicated in newborns and premature babies.
