Remarks

Propantheline Bromide

Propantheline Bromide belongs to the class of anticholinergic drugs that act by inhibiting the action of acetylcholine on postganglionic muscarinic receptors in the autonomic nervous system. It selectively blocks muscarinic receptors in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby decreasing gastrointestinal motility and secretions.

Propantheline Bromide is used to treat symptoms associated with gastrointestinal disorders, such as peptic ulcer disease, gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome, and colitis. It is also used to reduce excessive sweating and control bladder spasms.

The dosage of Propantheline Bromide depends on the patient's age, medical condition, and response to treatment. The usual adult dose is 15-30 mg taken 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime, not to exceed 120 mg/day. The dosage for children should be determined by a physician. It is recommended to start with a low dose and gradually increase it as needed.

The most common adverse reactions associated with Propantheline Bromide use are-

  • dry mouth
  • constipation
  • blurred vision
  • drowsiness
  • urinary retention

Other less common adverse reactions may include headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, palpitations, and allergic reactions.

  • Propantheline Bromide should be used with caution in patients with a history of narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention, or gastrointestinal obstruction.
  • It may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision, which can impair the ability to perform tasks requiring alertness.
  • Patients should avoid activities that require mental alertness, such as driving or operating machinery until they know how Propantheline Bromide affects them.
  • Patients should inform their doctor if they have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or any other medical condition before taking Propantheline Bromide.
  • Propantheline Bromide may interact with other medications, such as antihistamines, tricyclic antidepressants, and antipsychotic drugs, which can increase the risk of side effects.
  • Patients should avoid drinking alcohol while taking Propantheline Bromide as it can increase the risk of side effects.
