Rifaximin
Rifaximin is an antibacterial agent. Rifaximin inhibits bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase as a result of drug binding in the polymerase subunit deep within the DNA/RNA channel, allowing direct blockage of the elongating RNA consequently inhibits the growth of bacteria.
Rifaximin is indicated for the following conditions-
- Traveller's diarrhea (causes by Escherichia coli)
- Reduction in risk of overt Hepatic encephalopathy
- Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea
Travelers’ diarrhea
- One 200 mg tablet taken orally three times a day for 3 days, with or without food.
Hepatic encephalopathy
- One 550 mg tablet taken orally two times a day, with or without food.
Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea
- One 550 mg tablet 3 times a day for 14 days. Patients who experience recurrence can be retreated up to two times with the same regimen.
Commonly associated adverse reactions in travelers’ diarrhea:
- Flatulence
- headache
- abdominal pain
- rectal tenesmus
- defecation urgency
- nausea
Commonly associated adverse reactions in Hepatic encephalopathy:
- Peripheral edema
- nausea
- dizziness
- fatigue
- ascites
- Diarrhea caused by bacteria other than E. coli: Rifaximin was ineffective in diarrhea complicated by fever and/or blood in the stool, as well as diarrhea caused by pathogens other than E. coli.
- Discontinue Rifaximin and consider other medicines if diarrhea symptoms worsen or last longer than 24 hours.
- Diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile: Determine if diarrhea occurs after treatment, or if it improves or worsens during treatment.
- In individuals with severe hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh C), use with caution.
- When rifaximin and a P-glycoprotein inhibitor are used together, caution should be used.
Contraindication
Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to rifaximin or any component of the product.
There's no known contraindications of rifaximin in terms of food and drinks.
