Roxithromycin
Roxithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic. It is a broad spectrum bacteriostatic agent that exerts its action by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.
Roxithromycin is indicated for the following infections caused by susceptible species of bacteria-
- Respiratory tract infection (bronchitis, pneumonia)
- Skin infections (Impetigo, cellulitis)
- Pharyngitis
- Tonsilitis
- Urethritis
- Prostatitis
- Cervicitis
Roxithromycin is available as tablets and powder for suspension. It should be taken in an empty stomach at least 15 minutes before meal.
Adult: 150 mg twice a day or 300 mg once daily for 5-10 days.
Child: ≥40 kg: 150 mg twice a day for 5-10 days.
Patients with mild to moderate Hepatic impairment: 150 mg once daily.
How to reconstitute powder for suspension:
Side effects associated with Roxithromycin are as follows-
- Ventricular tachycardia
- Torsades de pointes
- myasthenia gravis aggravation.
- Eosinophilia.
- tinnitus
- Nausea
- diarrhea
- dizziness
- headache
Roxithromycin should be used with caution in the following cases-
- Patients with congenital prolongation of QT interval or other cardiac diseases;
- myasthenia gravis
- Renal and hepatic impairment
- Elderly
- Pregnancy and lactation
Contraindication
Roxithromycin is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to roxithromycin or other macrolides, such as-
