Rupatadine
Rupatadine is an H1-receptor antagonist and platelet activating factor (PAF) antagonist. It is used to treat various allergic conditions.
Rupatadine is indicated for the following conditions-
- Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
- Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
- Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria
- Adults and adolescents (over 12 years): The recommended daily dose is 10 mg. Rupatadine can be administered with or without food.
- Children aged 2 to 11 years: 1 teaspoonful (5 mL) of the oral solution, with or without food, once daily
- Children weighing equal or more than 10 kg to less than 25 kg: 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mL) oral solution, with or without food, once daily.
Commonly reported side effects of Rupatadine include-
- Headache
- Somnolence
- Fatigue/ Asthenia
- Dry mouth
- Rupatadine should be used with caution in patients with known QT interval prolongation, hypokalemia that has not been corrected, and patients with ongoing proarrhythmic conditions such as clinically significant bradycardia or acute myocardial ischemia.
- In elderly patients (65 years and older), rupatadine should be used with caution .
- Rupatadine 10 mg tablets are not currently recommended in patients with impaired kidney or liver function due to a lack of clinical experience.
Contraindication
