Sparfloxacin

Sparfloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting their DNA synthesis.

 

 

This drug is indicated for the following conditions:

  • Respiratory infections- Bronchitis, Pneumonia
  • Urinary Tract infection
  • Skin infection
 
  • Sparfloxacin is available only as oral tablets.
  • In individuals with normal renal function, the recommended daily dose of Sparfloxacin is two 200-mg tablets taken on the first day as a loading dose. After that, take one 200-mg pill every 24 hours for a total of 10 days of treatment (11 tablets).
  • In patients with impaired renal function (creatinine clearance <50 mg/mL), alteration of the dosage regimen is necessary.

 The commonly reported side effects of sparfloxacin include-

  • Sparofloxacin can cause tendonitis and tendon rupture.
  • It should be used with caution in renal diseases, gastric ulcers and with concomitant use of NSAIDs.
  • Sparofloxacin should be used with caution in patients with renal insufficiency and dosage adjustment maybe required.
  • Adequate hydration of patients receiving sparfloxacin should be maintained to prevent the formation of a highly concentrated urine.
  • While taking Sparfloxacin and for several days afterward, avoid exposure to direct or indirect sunlight (even while using sunscreens or sun blockers). When you see the first indications or symptoms of phototoxicity, you should stop using Sparfloxacin right away. Taking Sparfloxacin in the evening may lessen the risk of phototoxicity.

Contraindication

  • Drugs which can prolong QT interval are contraindicated during sparfloxacin therapy, for example-
  • Sparofloxacin is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to the drug or any drug of the fluoroquinolone class such as-

 

Milk, antacids and mineral supplements should not be taken while of sparofloxacin.

Sparofloxacin is contraindicated in Pregnancy and lactation. Children under 18 should not take the drug as it inhibits bone and cartilage growth.
