Sucralose

Sucralose is a non-nutritive, high-intensity artificial sweetener belonging to the class of chlorinated organic compounds. It is chemically synthesized by selectively replacing three hydroxyl groups in sucrose with chlorine atoms. The mechanism of action involves its binding to the sweet taste receptors on the tongue, producing a sweet taste without providing calories or affecting blood glucose levels.

Sucralose is used as a sugar substitute to sweeten food and beverages, including carbonated drinks, juices, chewing gums, baked goods, and dairy products. It is also used in medications, dietary supplements, and oral care products. Sucralose is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and approved for use in many countries.

The amount of sucralose used in food and beverages varies depending on the product and the desired level of sweetness. The Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for sucralose is 5 mg/kg body weight per day, which is equivalent to 340 mg for a 68 kg adult. It is recommended to follow the manufacturer's instructions on the label when using products containing sucralose.

The consumption of sucralose is generally considered safe and well-tolerated. However, some people may experience adverse reactions, including:

  • Gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, and stomach pain
  • Headache and dizziness
  • Allergic reactions such as itching, rash, and hives

  • People with phenylketonuria (PKU) should avoid products containing sucralose that contain phenylalanine, as they cannot metabolize this amino acid.
  • Sucralose is not recommended for use in cooking or baking, as high temperatures can cause it to break down and produce an off-taste.
  • There is limited information on the safety of sucralose during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and its use should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
  • Although sucralose is not known to affect blood glucose levels, people with diabetes should still monitor their blood sugar when using products containing sucralose.

Contraindication

There are no known contraindications for sucralose. However, people with hypersensitivity to chlorinated compounds should use sucralose with caution.
