Terbinafine

Terbinafine is an antifungal agent. It inhibits fungal cell membrane synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme squalene epoxidase that makes ergosterol necessary for the cell membrane.

Terbinafine is available as tablets and cream for topical administration.

  • Tablets: Onychomycosis
  • Cream:
    • Fungal skin infections caused by- T. RubrumT.Mentagrophytes, T. Verrucosum, T. Violaceum, Microsporum canis and Epidermophyton floccosum.
    • Yeast infection C. albicans
    • Pityriasis (tinea) versicolor due to Pityrosporum orbiculare
 

 

Terbinafine can be applied once or twice daily. The duration of treatment depends on the causative agent of the infection.

Tinea corporis, cruris

1 to 2 weeks

Tinea pedis

1 week

Cutaneous candidiasis

2 weeks

Pityriasis versicolor

2 weeks

Topical administration of terbinafine may cause the following side effects-

  • pruritus
  • skin exfoliation
  • application site pain
  • application site irritation
  • pigmentation disorder
  • skin burning sensation
  • erythema
  • scab 

Side effects associated with oral administration (tablets) include-

  • headache
  • diarrhea
  • rash
  • dyspepsia
  • liver problems
  • pruritus
  • taste disturbance
  • nausea
  • abdominal pain
  • flatulence

Cream:

  • Terbinafine Cream should only be used on the skin. Avoid coming into contact with the eyes. It's possible that it'll irritate your eyes. If you come into touch with your eyes by accident, rinse them well with running water.
  • Each daily dose of Terbinafine Cream contains 36 mg benzyl alcohol, which is equivalent to 10 mg/g. Allergies to benzyl alcohol are possible.
  • Cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol are found in Terbinafine Cream and may cause local skin irritation (e.g. contact dermatitis).

Tablets:

  • The use of terbinafine tablets for the treatment of onychomycosis in people with and without preexisting liver illness has resulted in a small number of cases of liver failure, some of which have resulted in death or liver transplantation.
  • In patients with current or chronic liver disease, the severity of hepatic events and/or their outcome may be worse.
  • If you have biochemical or clinical indications of liver injury, you should stop using terbinafine tablets.
  • Only a few cases of severe skin reactions have been reported (e.g., Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis). Treatment with terbinafine should be stopped if a worsening skin rash develops.

Contraindication

Hypersensitivity to terbinafine or any of the excipients contained in the cream
