Benzathine Penicillin G

Benzathine penicillin G is an antibiotic preparation which is administered by the intra-mascular route. Penicillin G benzathine has an extremely low solubility and, thus, the drug is slowly released from intramuscular injection sites. The drug is hydrolyzed to penicillin G. This combination of hydrolysis and slow absorption results in blood serum levels much lower but much more prolonged than other parenteral penicillins.

Benzathine penicillin G is indicated for the following diseases-

Benzathine Penicillin G is administered intramascularly. Care should be taken so that the medication is not injected near nerves or arteries.

Hypersensitivity reaction, although rare, might occur. Some side effects may occur if the medicine has been accidentally injected near a vein or nerve. Common side effects include-

  • nausea, vommiting, diarrhea
  • itching, sweating, allergic reaction
  • flushing (sudden warmth, redness, or tingly feeling)

 

Care should be taken to avoid intravenous or intra-arterial administration, or injection into or near major peripheral nerves or blood vessels, since such injection may produce neurovascular damage.

Contraindication

Benzathine penicillin G is contra indicated in patients who are hypersensitive to other beta lactam antibiotics.

There is no known contraindication of Benzathine penicillin G in terms of food and drinks.

Dosage adjustment may be requires in patients with renal impairment.
