Benzyl Alcohol

Benzyl Alcohol is a topical medication classified as an antiparasitic agent. Its mechanism of action is not fully understood but is believed to work by suffocating and killing lice and their eggs (nits).

  • Benzyl Alcohol is indicated for the treatment of head lice infestations in adults and children.
  • It is for external use only and should be applied to the scalp and hair according to the instructions.

Apply Benzyl Alcohol Lotion 5% in two separate treatments spaced one week apart. While Benzyl Alcohol Lotion 5% effectively eliminates lice, it may not eliminate lice eggs. Therefore, a second treatment should be administered exactly one week (7 days) after the initial treatment.

Adverse reactions may vary among individuals, and the following are common adverse reactions associated with the use of Benzyl Alcohol:

  • Scalp irritation or itching
  • Redness or mild burning sensation at the application site
  • Dry or flaky scalp
  • Tingling or numbness

  • Avoid contact with eyes: Benzyl Alcohol should not be applied near or in the eyes. In case of accidental contact, rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Allergic reactions: If signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, hives, or difficulty breathing, occur, discontinue use and seek medical attention.
  • Skin sensitivity: Some individuals may experience increased sensitivity to Benzyl Alcohol. If excessive irritation or discomfort occurs, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.
  • Age considerations: The safety and efficacy of Benzyl Alcohol in infants under 6 months of age have not been established. Use with caution in pediatric populations.
  • Consult healthcare professional: If lice infestation persists or worsens after treatment, consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation and management.

Contraindication

Benzyl Alcohol is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to benzyl alcohol or any of the components of the formulation.

It should not be used on premature infants or infants under 6 months of age without medical supervision.
