Beta Carotene

Beta carotene is a provitamin and a member of the carotenoid family. Beta carotene is converted to vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A is essential for normal vision, immune function, and cellular growth and differentiation.

Beta carotene is indicated for the following:

  • Dietary supplementation of vitamin A in individuals with vitamin A deficiency or those at risk of deficiency
  • Support of overall eye health and vision
  • Antioxidant support to reduce the risk of oxidative damage
  • Adjunct therapy in the treatment of certain photosensitivity disorders
  • Osteoarthritis

For use as a dietary supplement:

  • For oral dosage forms (capsules or chewable tablets):
    • Adults and teenagers: 6 to 15 milligrams (mg) of beta-carotene (the equivalent of 10,000 to 25,000 Units of vitamin A activity) per day.
    • Children: 3 to 6 mg of beta-carotene (the equivalent of 5,000 to 10,000 Units of vitamin A activity) per day.

The following side effects may occur with beta carotene-

  • Yellowing of the skin (carotenodermia)
  • Discoloration of the urine or feces
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances (e.g., nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps)
  • Allergic reactions (e.g., rash, itching, swelling)
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight

  • Beta carotene should not be used as a substitute for a well-balanced diet. It is important to obtain nutrients from a variety of food sources.
  • Use caution in individuals with a history of smoking or exposure to asbestos, as high-dose beta carotene supplementation may increase the risk of lung cancer in these populations.
  • Beta carotene supplements should be used with caution in individuals with a history of liver disease, gallbladder disease, or certain types of blood disorders.
  • Individuals with a known hypersensitivity to beta carotene or any components of the formulation should avoid its use.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult with their healthcare provider before taking beta carotene supplements.

Contraindication

Beta carotene is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to beta carotene or any components of the formulation.
