Tetramisole

Tetramisole is an anthelmintic drug that belongs to the class of imidazothiazoles. It works by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme in the parasites called cholinesterase, which results in muscle paralysis and death of the parasites.

Tetramisole is indicated for the treatment of various gastrointestinal nematodes and lungworms in livestock animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs. It is also used in the treatment of parasitic infections in horses and dogs.

The dosage and administration of tetramisole vary depending on the species of the animal and the type of infection. The drug is usually administered orally or by injection. The recommended dosage is 7.5-15 mg/kg of body weight for most species, except for dogs where the dose is 50-75 mg/kg. It is important to follow the dosage and administration instructions provided by the veterinarian.

The most common adverse reactions associated with tetramisole use include loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea. Rare side effects include hypersensitivity reactions, muscle tremors, and seizures. Overdose may cause severe symptoms such as ataxia, respiratory depression, and even death.

  • Tetramisole should be used with caution in animals with liver or kidney disease as it can cause further damage to these organs.
  • Pregnant animals should not be treated with tetramisole during the first trimester as it may cause fetal abnormalities.
  • Tetramisole should not be administered to animals with a history of hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug.
  • The drug may interact with other medications such as anticholinesterase agents, so it is important to inform the veterinarian about any medications the animal is taking.
  • Tetramisole should not be used in animals intended for human consumption within a certain period of time after administration, as it may leave residues in the meat or milk.

Contraindication

Tetramisole is contraindicated in animals with hypersensitivity to the drug.

It should also not be used in animals with severe liver or kidney disease, or in those that are pregnant during the first trimester.
