Tylosin Tartrate

Tylosin is an antibiotic medication used to treat a variety of bacterial infections in animals, including pigs, cattle, and poultry. It is available in various forms, including oral powders, oral solutions, and injectable solutions. Tylosin is not approved for use in humans, and its use in food-producing animals is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

  • Tylosin is indicated for the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections in animals, including swine dysentery, erysipelas, and infections caused by Mycoplasma, Streptococcus, and Staphylococcus bacteria.
  • Tylosin is also used in the prevention and treatment of enzootic pneumonia in calves and pigs.
  • Tylosin is effective against gram-positive bacteria and some gram-negative bacteria, and it is particularly useful in treating respiratory tract infections.
  • The dosage of Tylosin will vary depending on the type of infection being treated and the species of animal being treated.
  • Tylosin is usually administered orally, either by mixing the powder with feed or by providing the oral solution directly to the animal.
  • Tylosin may also be administered subcutaneously, intramuscularly or intravenously.
  • Consult your veterinarian for the appropriate dosage and administration schedule for your animal.
  • Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea, vomiting, and loss of appetite may occur.

  • Skin reactions: Itching, hives, and rash may occur.

  • Allergic reactions: Anaphylaxis and other serious allergic reactions are rare but can occur.

  • Liver and kidney problems: Tylosin may cause changes in liver and kidney function in some animals.

  • Superinfections: Tylosin may cause overgrowth of non-susceptible bacteria or fungi.

  • Toxicity: Tylosin may be toxic to animals if used in high doses or for prolonged periods of time.

Precautions:

  • Tylosin should be used with caution in animals with a history of kidney or liver disease.
  • Tylosin may interact with other medications, so it is important to inform your veterinarian of all medications your animal is currently taking.
  • It is important to use Tylosin for the full course of treatment, even if the animal appears to be feeling better.
  • As with all antibiotics, the use of Tylosin can lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
  • Tylosin should not be used in animals that are allergic to macrolide antibiotics.

Contraindication

  • Tylosin is contraindicated in animals with a known hypersensitivity to the drug.
  • Tylosin should not be used in animals that are pregnant or lactating.
  • Tylosin should not be used in animals that are suffering from kidney or liver disease.
