Vasline

Vaseline is a brand name for petroleum jelly, which is a mixture of natural waxes and mineral oils. It is classified as a topical emollient and skin protectant. Its mechanism of action is to create a protective barrier on the skin's surface, which helps to lock in moisture and prevent the skin from drying out. This barrier also helps to protect the skin from irritants and bacteria.

Vaseline is indicated for the relief of dry skin, chapped lips, minor cuts, and burns. It can also be used as a lubricant for certain medical procedures, such as rectal thermometry. In addition, Vaseline can be used to protect the skin from the effects of cold and wind.

The dose and administration of Vaseline depend on the specific condition being treated. For dry skin or chapped lips, apply a thin layer of Vaseline to the affected area as needed. For minor cuts and burns, clean the area with soap and water, then apply a thin layer of Vaseline and cover with a sterile bandage. For use as a lubricant, apply a small amount of Vaseline to the affected area as needed.

Vaseline is generally well-tolerated, and adverse reactions are rare. The most common side effect is skin irritation, which may occur if Vaseline is applied to broken or infected skin. In rare cases, an allergic reaction may occur, which can cause redness, itching, and swelling.

  • Vaseline should not be applied to deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns.
  • Vaseline should not be used on the face of infants or young children, as it may increase the risk of accidental ingestion.
  • Vaseline should be used with caution in patients with a history of skin allergies or sensitivities.
  • Vaseline should be stored at room temperature and kept out of the reach of children.
  • If skin irritation or an allergic reaction occurs, discontinue use and seek medical attention.

Contraindication

Vaseline is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to petroleum jelly or any of its components.

Vaseline should also not be used on infected or weeping skin.
