Vinpocetine

Vinpocetine is a synthetic derivative of vincamine, a natural alkaloid obtained from the leaves of the lesser periwinkle plant. It is classified as a vasodilator and a nootropic drug. Its mechanism of action involves increasing blood flow to the brain, improving oxygen and glucose uptake, and enhancing neuronal function.

Vinpocetine is indicated for the treatment of cerebral insufficiency, which includes conditions such as memory loss, dizziness, vertigo, and cognitive decline. It is also used as a dietary supplement for cognitive enhancement and as an athletic performance enhancer.

The recommended dosage of Vinpocetine is 5 to 10 mg, taken three times daily, with meals. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 30 mg. The dosage may vary based on the patient's condition and response to treatment.

The most common adverse reactions associated with Vinpocetine include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort. Less common adverse reactions may include headache, dizziness, insomnia, flushing, and allergic reactions.

  • Patients with a history of allergic reactions to Vinpocetine or any of its components should not take this medication.
  • Vinpocetine may interact with other medications, including anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents, and blood pressure medications. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medications they are taking.
  • Vinpocetine should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women.
  • Vinpocetine may lower blood pressure, which may cause dizziness and lightheadedness. Patients should be advised to avoid activities that require mental alertness until they know how the medication affects them.
  • Vinpocetine may increase the risk of bleeding, and patients should be advised to report any signs of bleeding or bruising to their healthcare provider.
  • Vinpocetine should be used with caution in patients with liver or kidney disease, as the drug is metabolized in these organs.

Contraindication

Vinpocetine is contraindicated in patients with a history of allergic reactions to the medication or any of its components.
