Amiloride Hydrochloride + Hydrochlorothiazide

Amiloride Hydrochloride + Hydrochlorothiazide is a combination medication comprised of amiloride- a potassium sparring diuretic and hydrochlorothiazide.

Amiloride Hydrochloride + Hydrochlorothiazide is indicated in the following health conditions-

  • Congestive heart failure
  • Hypertension
  • Hepatic cirrhosis with ascites.
  • Amiloride Hydrochloride + Hydrochlorothiazide is available as tablets.
  • Each tablet contains 5 mg of anhydrous amiloride HCl and 50 mg of hydrochlorothiazide.
  • The recommended starting dose is one tablet per day. If necessary, the dosage can be increased to two tablets each day. More than two amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide tablets per day are normally unnecessary, and no controlled experience with larger doses exists. When taken alone, hydrochlorothiazide can be given in doses ranging from 12.5 to 50 mg per day. When taken with other antihypertensive drugs, patients usually don't need more than 50 mg of hydrochlorothiazide per day.

Side effects associated (incidence >1%) with amiloride + hydrochlorothiazide include-

  • Headache
  • Asthenia
  • Arrythmia
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Dyspnea
  • Rash
  • Clinical symptoms of fluid or electrolyte imbalance, such as hyponatremia, hypochloremic alkalosis, and hypokalemia, should be monitored.
  • Amiloride HCl and hydrochlorothiazide have both been linked to an increase in BUN levels.
  • Diuretics can cause azotemia in persons with kidney dysfunction. Patients with compromised renal function may experience cumulative effects from the components of amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide. If renal impairment is detected, the medication should be stopped.
