Bupivacaine + Dextrose

Bupivacaine + Dextrose is a local anesthetic. Bupivacaine diffuses into nerve cells, where it binds to sodium channels, preventing them from opening and blocking sodium ion influx. Nerve cells that are unable to allow sodium into their cells are unable to depolarize and conduct nerve impulses. Bupivacaine + Dextrose is injected into the spinal chord.

Bupivacaine + Dextrose is indicated for the production of subarachnoid block (spinal anesthesia). Standard textbooks should be consulted to determine the accepted procedures and techniques for the administration of spinal anesthesia.

The dosage will be determined and applied by the physician.

The following side effects may occur in cases of overdosage-

  • nervousness
  • dizziness
  • blurred vision
  • tremors
  • drowsiness
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • pain at injection site
  • All forms of local and regional anesthesia with levobupivacaine should be performed in well-equipped facilities and administered by staff trained and experienced in the required anesthetic techniques and able to diagnose and treat any unwanted adverse effects that may occur.
  • The safety and effectiveness of spinal anesthetics depend on proper dosage, correct technique, adequate precautions, and readiness for emergencies. Resuscitative equipment, oxygen, and other resuscitative drugs should be available for immediate use.
  • The patient should have intravenous fluids running via an indwelling catheter to assure a functioning intravenous pathway.
  • Bupivacaine + Dextrose, like other local anesthetic solutions containing a vasoconstrictor, can cause methemoglobinemia, particularly in conjunction with methemoglobin-inducing agents.
  • Spinal anesthetics should be used with caution in patients with severe disturbances of cardiac rhythm, shock, or heart block.
  • Sympathetic blockade occurring during spinal anesthesia may result in peripheral vasodilation and hypotension, the extent depending on the number of dermatomes blocked.

Contraindication

Bupivacaine + Dextrose is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to it or to any local anesthetic agent of the amide-type or to other components of Bupivacaine + Dextrose solutions.
