Fluphenazine Hydrochloride + Nortriptyline

Fluphenazine Hydrochloride + Nortriptyline is an antidepressant combination that belongs to the class of antipsychotic drugs and tricyclic antidepressants, respectively. Fluphenazine is a dopamine antagonist that works by blocking postsynaptic D1 and D2 receptors in the central nervous system. Nortriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant that works by increasing the levels of norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain by inhibiting their reuptake.

 

Fluphenazine Hydrochloride + Nortriptyline is indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults.

 

The recommended starting dose of Fluphenazine Hydrochloride + Nortriptyline is one tablet (0.5 mg of Fluphenazine Hydrochloride and 10 mg of Nortriptyline) taken orally at bedtime. The dose may be increased gradually up to a maximum of four tablets per day, as needed. The dosage may vary depending on the patient's age, medical history, and response to treatment.

 

The most common adverse reactions of Fluphenazine Hydrochloride + Nortriptyline include-

  • dry mouth
  • drowsiness
  • dizziness
  • tardive dyskinesia
  • constipation
  • blurred vision
  • weight gain
  • difficulty urinating

Other less common adverse reactions may include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, nervousness, and tremors.

 

  • Fluphenazine Hydrochloride + Nortriptyline should be used with caution in patients with a history of seizures, cardiovascular disease, hepatic or renal impairment, or glaucoma.
  • The drug should not be used in patients who are allergic to Fluphenazine Hydrochloride, Nortriptyline, or any of its components.
  • Fluphenazine Hydrochloride + Nortriptyline may impair the patient's ability to drive or operate machinery, so patients should be advised to avoid these activities until they know how the drug affects them.
  • Patients should avoid alcohol while taking Fluphenazine Hydrochloride + Nortriptyline, as it may increase the risk of drowsiness and other side effects.
  • The drug should be used with caution in elderly patients, as they may be more sensitive to its effects.

 

Contraindication

  • Fluphenazine Hydrochloride + Nortriptyline is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Fluphenazine Hydrochloride, Nortriptyline, or any of its components.
  • The drug should also not be used in those taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as-

 

The drug should also not be used in patients with-

  • glaucoma
  • recent myocardial infarction
  • heart failure
  • blood dyscrasias
  • renal/ liver problems
