Gramacidin + Neomycin + Polymixin
Gramacidin, Neomycin, and Polymixin are all antibiotics that work by inhibiting the growth and proliferation of bacteria. Gramacidin and Polymixin work by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane, while Neomycin inhibits protein synthesis. The combination of these three antibiotics is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
The ophthalmic solution of Gramacidin, Neomycin, and Polymixin is indicated for the treatment of bacterial eye infections such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, and blepharitis caused by susceptible organism.
The recommended dosage and administration for the ophthalmic solution of Gramacidin, Neomycin, and Polymixin are as follows:
- Shake the bottle well before use.
- Instill 1 to 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 4 hours, or as directed by the physician.
- Treatment should continue for at least 48 hours after the eye appears normal.
The following adverse reactions have been reported with the use of Gramacidin, Neomycin, and Polymixin ophthalmic solution:
- Transient burning or stinging upon instillation
- Itching or redness of the eye
- Blurred vision
- Swelling of the eyelid
- Photophobia
- Use of the solution for more than 10 days may increase the risk of developing superinfections or fungal infections.
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi.
- Patients should be advised not to touch the tip of the dropper to any surface, as this may contaminate the solution.
- The solution should not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to any of its components.
- Contact lenses should not be worn during treatment with the ophthalmic solution.
Contraindication
The ophthalmic solution of Gramacidin, Neomycin, and Polymixin is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any of its components.
