Cefditoren pivoxil

Cefditoren pivoxil is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. It is a bactericidal antibiotic.

Cefditoren is indicated for the following infections caused by susceptible organisms-

  • Skin infections
  • Tonsilitis
  • Pharyngitis
  • Bronchitis
  • Community acquired pneumonia

Cefditoren is available as oral tablets. The dosage can vary between 200 & 400 mg depending on the type of infection. It should be taken after a meal.

The most commonly associated side effects of cefditoren are-

  • Nausea
  • Vommiting
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Rash

Patients with renal impairment should be monitored and may require dosage adjustment.

Contraindication

  • Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to ant beta lactam antibiotics.
  • Cefditoren is also contraindicated in patients with carnitine deficiency.
  • As the medication contains sodium caseinate, it is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to casein.
