Cefpirome sulphate

Cefpirome sulphate is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. It is a bactericidal antibiotic.

Cefpirome is indicated for the following infections caused by susceptible organisms-

  • Septicemia
  • Lower respiratory infections- Bronchitis
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Pyelonephritis
  • Skin infections
  • Bone and joint infections

  • Cefpirome is only available as a parenteral medication. The dosage is determined by the intensity and location of the illness, the susceptibility of the infecting microorganisms, as well as the patient's age, weight, and renal function. The medication is given via intravenous injection or infusion.
  • The usual dosage for adults is- 1-2 gm every 12 hour via IV injection over 3-5 minutes or infuse over 20-30 minutes.
  • For pediatric patients, the recommended dose is 50mg/kg per dose administered every 8 hours.
  • No adjustment is necessary for patients with hepatic impairment.
  • In patients with creatinine clearance less than or equal to 60 mL/min, the dose of Cefpirome should be adjusted to compensate for the slower rate of renal elimination.

The commonly associated side effects are-

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Thrombophlebitis
  • Eosinophilia
  • Urticaria (rarer)
  • Vaginitis (rarer)

Renal function should be monitored during treatment with cefpirome and furosemide or ethacrynic acid diuretics, as well as potentially nephrotoxic medicines such certain antibiotics (aminoglycosides in particular). The dosage may be changed based on renal clearance in cases of compromised renal function.

Contraindication

Cefpriome is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to antibiotics of the beta lactam class such as-

Cefpirome must not be used during pregnancy. Breast-feeding should be discontinued during treatment with Cefpirome.
