Acetylsalicylic Acid

Acetylsalicylic acid is a medication of the class NSAID used to reduce pain, fever, or inflammation. It also has anticoagulant activity making it useful as a secondary treatment for cardiac diseases.

  • Reduce the risk of death and myocardial infarction (MI) in patients with chronic coronary artery disease, such as patients with a history of MI or unstable angina pectoris or with chronic stable angina
  • Reduce the risk of death and recurrent stroke in patients who have had an ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack
  • Antipyretic: Cold fever and influenzae.
  • Mild to moderate pain: Headache, muscle pain, dysmenorrhoea and toothache etc.

The recommended dose of Acetylsalicylic acid is one capsule (162.5 mg) once daily. Take the capsules with a full glass of water at the same time each day.

Pain, inflammatory diseases and as antipyretic: Aspirin 300 mg 1-3 tablets 6 hourly with a maximum daily dose of 4 gm.

Side effects associated with acetylsalicylic acid include-

  • Increased bleeding tendencies
  • Dyspepsia
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • Urticaria
 

 

  • Increased risk of bleeding.
  • Acetylsalicylic acid can cause gastric mucosal irritation and bleeding. Patients with a history of active peptic ulcer disease are at particular risk.
  • Acetylsalicylic acid can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman.

  • rhinitis
  • nasal polyps
