Acetylsalicylic Acid
Acetylsalicylic acid is a medication of the class NSAID used to reduce pain, fever, or inflammation. It also has anticoagulant activity making it useful as a secondary treatment for cardiac diseases.
- Reduce the risk of death and myocardial infarction (MI) in patients with chronic coronary artery disease, such as patients with a history of MI or unstable angina pectoris or with chronic stable angina
- Reduce the risk of death and recurrent stroke in patients who have had an ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack
- Antipyretic: Cold fever and influenzae.
- Mild to moderate pain: Headache, muscle pain, dysmenorrhoea and toothache etc.
The recommended dose of Acetylsalicylic acid is one capsule (162.5 mg) once daily. Take the capsules with a full glass of water at the same time each day.
Pain, inflammatory diseases and as antipyretic: Aspirin 300 mg 1-3 tablets 6 hourly with a maximum daily dose of 4 gm.
- Increased risk of bleeding.
- Acetylsalicylic acid can cause gastric mucosal irritation and bleeding. Patients with a history of active peptic ulcer disease are at particular risk.
- Acetylsalicylic acid can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman.
Contraindication
Acetylsalicylic acid is contraindicated in patients having-
- Asthma
- rhinitis
- nasal polyps
